Watercooler Wednesday #114 - Penny's Colour Challenge

Penny has us playing with colour this week at Watercooler Wednesday - one of my favourite types of challenge. It's easy to get in a rut and reach for the same colours again and again. And we all have our favourite combos. So, a colour challenge is a good way to break out of the box.

Here is what Penny gave us to work with:
I do really like each of these colours, but don't think I have used them all together before. Since it's always so easy to reach for one of my flower-themed stamp sets - another rut I fall into all the time! - I looked for something different. And, it just so happened my Dragonfly Dreams was near the top of the pile. This is the result:
The dots from the set make a great border, mostly Pool Party with just a sprinkling of Calypso Coral. I first stamped the sold dragonfly image onto the Whisper White cardstock with Island Indigo - stamped off once for the bottom layer, and then stamped full strength for the detailed layer.

Next I die cut the dragonfly out of Calypso Coral cardstock and coated it liberally with Clear Wink of Stella. I placed it  over the stamped image, slightly offset to look like a shadow under the die cut. Here is a close-up of the dragonfly:
For some reason, when I went to fold the cardstock for my card base, I discovered it wasn't the correct size to score it a 4 1/4" So, rather than cut another piece, I improvised and took the opportunity to add a strip of Island Indigo to the inside. Like this:
You will also notice on the backside of the main image panel an array of the dots stamped in all three colours. I had initially done that when I first started, decided I didn't really like it, so I flipped the piece over and started over on the other side. But, as just an accent - it works!

What will you create with these lucious colours? Go to Watercooler Wednesday to see what the other artists have done, then show us your colours.

  2. This card literally brought a smile to my face Gail. Great use of the Dragonfly stamp and die cut. Love the way you stamped and then off set the die cut. I bet the glimmer from the Wink of Stella looks awesome on the real card. I great idea to use the coloured dots for a backdrop, it looks really cool. Thanks Gail for always inspiring.

  3. Gail I absolutely love the way you think outside the box and make lemonade out of your potential lemons. Great idea to add that Island Indigo inside. And the strip of stamped dots along the edge inside---a brilliant use of an idea which didn't work the way you had initially planned. This is a stunning card and the "backstory" is no less entertaining. Thanks for sharing.
